Si l\u2019on assimile l\u2019\u00e9nergie de la surtension \u00e0 un certain volume de liquide, <strong>la mise \u00e0 la terre se repr\u00e9sente comme un entonnoir<\/strong>. Pour cet entonnoir, le diam\u00e8tre de l\u2019ouverture de d\u00e9charge est comparable \u00e0 la qualit\u00e9 de la mise \u00e0 la terre. On observe que la mise \u00e0 la terre avec une r\u00e9sistance plus \u00e9lev\u00e9e (entonnoir \u00e0 gauche) est satur\u00e9e par l\u2019\u00e9nergie de la d\u00e9charge (l\u2019entonnoir se remplit car il ne peut pas se vider suffisamment rapidement). Intuitivement, <strong>cela prolonge le temps pendant lequel les \u00e9quipements \u00e0 prot\u00e9ger sont expos\u00e9s aux effets de la surtension<\/strong>, entra\u00eenant ainsi une usure accrue (l\u2019entonnoir met plus de temps \u00e0 se vider \u00e0 cause de son ouverture plus petite).<\/p><p>Comme tous les \u00e9quipements sont reli\u00e9s \u00e0 la terre, cela peut m\u00eame conduire \u00e0 ce que le courant, <strong>n\u2019ayant pas de meilleur chemin pour l\u2019\u00e9vacuation<\/strong>, finisse par endommager directement les \u00e9quipements, rendant la protection inefficace (voir figure 3).
