SERIAL AND PARALLEL COMMUNICATIONS
In addition to the computers connected to a local area network,
there are other connected devices such as printers, ploters, scanners,
etc.
In some industrial sectors it is very common to gather data from
certain departments or from production processes in central computers.
For this type of industrial communication usually communication
standards like RS485 or RS232, for instance, are used.
Some of these communication standards allow several devices to
be connected to the same bus. In the case that one device receives
the impact of a surge voltage, a chain reaction may happen when
the surge voltage is propagated within the network, up to producing
important damage to the local area network.
This damage can be avoided by installing appropriate protections
agains surge voltages.
