ALMA is a giant observatory being built on the Chajnantor plateau, 5000 meters above sea level in northern Chile.

It comprises 66 high precision 12 and 7 m diameter radiotelescope antennas, providing unprecedented sensitivity and resolution. Thanks to ALMA, astronomers can study the cool Universe and discover new clues about the formation of stars and planets.

ALMA is formed by a set of mobile antennas (over 100 tonnes each), which can be moved to various different positions, in order to reconfigure the telescope.

The nature of the installation led to the decision to install Nimbus® ESE lightning protection technology, which makes it possible to achieve a greater volume of protection than with passive protection systems, providing greater efficiency.

For the protection of this major infrastructure, Cirprotec supplied a total of 150 Nimbus® lightning rods to provide the entire facility against lightning.
